Soldiers, Veer Naris felicitated

Outstanding sportsmen, soldiers and ‘Veer Naaris’ (widows of soldiers) of the Madras Engineering Group and Centre were felicitated here on Wednesday by Lieutenant-General Satish P. Nawathe, General Officer Commanding, 101 Area and Colonel Commandant of the Madras Sappers.

Five serving soldiers and a deceased soldier were honoured with the prestigious Man of the Half Year award in recognition of their commitment, courage, devotion and initiative beyond the call of duty. Seventeen sportsmen from the group received ‘Corps Colours’.

Over 3,000 soldiers of all ranks of the group attended the colourful Sainik Sammelan ceremony, according to an official statement.

Three Dronacharya awardees who were felicitated include Honorary Captain G. Manoharan (retired) in boxing; Havildar Jose V. Jacob (retired) in rowing and Havildar Robin P.U., member of the bronze winning rowing team at the just concluded Incheon Asian Games 2014.

The Veer Naris who were felicitated are Binumol, wife of Lance Naik Sooraj Kumar; Gayatri Muttatti, wife of Sapper Suresh Muttatti; and J.Rekha, wife of Lance Naik Satish R.
