Mothers and newborns at the hospitals run by Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) will soon have hot water facility. That apart, the civic body’s 30 maternity and referral hospitals will get Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS) and generators.

A.H. Basavaraju, chairperson of Standing Committee for Ward-level Works, on Thursday said that the panel, apart from approving the proposal to install solar water heaters, UPS and generators, has also given the green signal for renovation of a few hospitals.

While water heaters of 100 litre capacity are being installed at a cost of Rs. 75,000 each (including laying pipes and plumbing), officials have been given the option of either floating a tender for installation of UPS and generators or get it done through Karnataka Rural Infrastructure Development Ltd. (KRIDL). The estimated cost for the latter is around Rs. 1.5 crore. Mr. Basavaraju said that the BBMP would install solar water heaters in its 40 staff quarters — 20 on Magadi Road and the rest near Subbaiah Circle — too at a cost of Rs. 30 lakh. He said that the committee had also approved other works, including construction of a multi-speciality-cum-maternity home and staff quarters at an estimated cost of Rs. 14.55 crore on Pottery Road and a super speciality hospital at at Kaveripura.
