Social welfare dept official caught taking bribe

Anti-Corruption Bureau officials on Tuesday caught an official working with the social welfare department in Shashapura taluk of Yadgir district accepting a bribe of Rs 10,000.

According to the police, the department had launched an awareness campaign against untouchability through street plays.

The person, who ran the campaign, had applied for Rs 3.7 lakh, the expenses incurred during the campaign. He said the official, Bharamappa, demanded Rs 30,000 from him to the release the funds. He then approached the ACB, which laid a trap and caught Bharamappa.

The accused official has been booked under Prevention of Corruption Act and remanded in judicial custody.
