SMS alerts to monitor inmates on parole

Concerned about the growing number of prison inmates jumping bail or parole, the State prisons department has come out with a plan to track them.

An SMS alert project under the e-prison scheme will soon be introduced, under which the jurisdictional police will get an SMS alert as soon as the inmate is released.

This will help them to monitor the movements of inmates and contain anti-social activities, a senior official said.

The department has been instructed to take the latest photograph of all inmates and record their finger prints and details.

The prisons department will also launch a facility where meeting an inmate will be possible through online booking. Under the system, relatives and friends can book an appointment online on the prisons’ website.

“We are also planning a videoconferencing facility to help people who travel from distant places meet their family members in jail,” said an official. As per the plan, people can book the videoconferencing facility from the district prison and get an appointment.
