After giving away 630 flats built under the Basic Services for the Urban Poor (BSUP) component of Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) in Lakshman Rao Nagar slum two days ago, Chief Minister Jagadish Shettar on Wednesday handed over allotment letters to 800 beneficiaries in Ragigudda slum of J.P. Nagar.

Speaking on the occasion, the Chief Minister said similar housing projects were being taken up by the Karnataka Slum Development Board and Karnataka Housing Board (KHB) across the State. “Our priority is to make Karnataka slum-free. We want to clear the existing 2,251 declared slums in the State, rehabilitate the residents and ensure that new slums do not come up,” he said.

Pointing out that more than 40 lakh people resided in slums across the State, the Chief Minister said: “We want to rehabilitate these people and improve their living conditions. Housing projects worth crores of rupees are underway across the State with funds from JNNURM.”

Housing Minister V. Somanna called upon the beneficiaries not to sublet or sell the houses to others. “We are allotting the letters in the names of the wives of the beneficiaries. This is to ensure that the men do not mortgage the property without their wives’ consent,” he said. Jayanagar MLA B.N. Vijaykumar and officials from Karnataka Slum Development Board were present.
