Skywalks: a nice idea that does not work

February 28, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:32 am IST - Bengaluru:

Skywalks is the first solution offered by the BBMP and the traffic police for any pedestrian woes.

Three years ago, the city traffic police had helped BBMP identify 100 spots across the city for building skywalks. BBMP opted for dismountable metallic bridges equipped with elevators. However, the Directorate of Urban Land Transport (DULT) conducted a feasibility study of these 33 locations and termed 18 as unfeasible. In most cases, DULT criticised the locations.

Traffic expert M.N. Srihari criticised the civic agencies for seeing skywalks only as a source of revenue and not as a facility.

Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) B. Dayananda said that while lack of an elevator is cited as a reason for non-optimum use of skywalks, those equipped with one are also not used to their full potential.
