Six Ugandan students were arrested here in the early hours of Saturday for allegedly assaulting four policemen while in an inebriated state.
Assistant Sub-Inspector Rajagopal and three police constables Krishna Murthy, Vedamurthy and Rajashekar sustained injuries in the incident. They are being treated in the government hospital at Yelahanka.
The police were routinely checking vehicles near Bellahalli Cross on Bellary Road. At about 2.15 a.m., seeing a car being driven recklessly, the police tried to stop the vehicle, an officer of the Sampigehalli Police Station, said.
“However, the driver hit the barricade and sped away. When the police managed to stop the car near Federal School on Hegdenagar Main Road, the accused snatched their batons and attacked them,” the officer said.
The arrested have been identified as Rony (22), Priyan (19), Mohammed Hussein (22), Diana (22), Mary (22), and Angeala (22), all residents of Kattigenahalli.
The police said the accused also manhandled doctors and other staff at the Yelahanka government hospital when they were brought for medical examination. They created a ruckus and refused to give blood samples for tests, the police said.
The police have seized their passports, mobile phones, the car and driving licences, and informed the Ugandan Embassy about the incident.
The accused were produced before a local court, which remanded them in judicial custody till August 6, the police said.
