The girlfriend of a wealthy businessman, who had been abducted for ransom, was among the six persons arrested by the Kengeri police on Thursday night.

The businessman, G.N. Rajanna Reddy (57), a resident of Attibele and also a property dealer, was abducted near Attibele on Thursday night. The abduction, according to the police, was engineered by his girlfriend, Suguna (31), who sought help of five others, for extracting money from the victim.

The others arrested are Geeta (32), S. Manikanthan (24), from Kengeri; Arun (25) and Anil Kumar (26), from Bangalore city; and Rajesh (25) from Tamil Nadu.

The police said that Suguna and Rajanna were allegedly in a relationship for about a year and they had met through her relatives, who were tenants of Rajanna. Over a period of time, Suguna learnt of Rajanna’s wealth and planned to amass it. As per the plot that she hatched along with her associates, she reportedly asked Rajanna to meet her near a bus-stop near Attibele on Thursday night. Rajanna came in his two-wheeler and the couple travelled to Kaivara, near Chickaballapur, where they decided to stay in a lodge.

Meanwhile, the other gang members, who followed them in a car, barged into the room, threatened Rajanna before stealing two gold rings and Rs. 5,200 from him. The gang then forced Rajanna into their car and drove to Kodipalya near Kengeri where they took photographs of him standing naked next to Suguna. Threatening to release the picture to the media, the gang demanded Rs. 50 lakh as ransom.

Rajanna, who requested the gang not to release the pictures, said he would call his friend to bring the cash and made several calls to his friend, Subramani. When Subramani finally received the call, Rajanna told him to get cash near R.R. Nagar Hospital claiming that he had met with an accident.

Subramani, however, grew suspicious when he found Rajanna sound anxious. He then informed the police control room, following which the Kengeri police rushed to the spot where Subramani was asked to come. They nabbed the six persons and rescued Rajanna. The car was owned by one of the accused, Manikanthan, who claimed that he was unaware about the abduction plan and was only told to get his car. The Kengeri police are continuing further investigations.
