Analysis of call records helped the Cubbon Park police nab six persons, including a student, on charges of harassing a group of five women on M.G. Road late on Saturday night. The women had come to have ice cream at a popular milkshake bar.
The police zeroed in on the accused after analysing over 200 mobile call records from the nearest towers. Besides, the victims had provided a video clipping taken with a mobile phone of the alleged incident. The victims had told the police that some of the men were talking on their mobile phones casually at the time of the incident, which helped in identifying the suspects, sources said.
The arrested persons are T. Nagesh, a sales executive of a real estate agency at Whitefield; Harish, a driver from RT Nagar; Devaraj, a casual labourer; Kiran, a BA student at a private college in Sarjapura; Satish, a driver and Subramani, who works in a provision store. Kiran, Satish and Subramani are from Hosur.
In their complaint, the women said that they were seated in their SUV and the driver had gone to get ice cream. Around 11.30 p.m., the men stared at them, stood around the vehicle and tried to open the door. They fled after the women raised an alarm.
Announcing the arrest, the Police commissioner M.N. Reddi said, “We caught the six men quickly. I am happy with the team of officers that located them. The men had come to MG Road and were moving around after having drinks in a local bar. They began stalking the victims, going close to the car and even attempting to force open the door that resulted in panic and fear in the minds of the women. They passed comments, then started to bang on the car and made gestures at the victims, who were scared and shouted for help from inside the car. We are questioning the men to ascertain the motive behind their act. During interrogation, the accused confessed to the crime.”
Mr. Reddi said that the police are verifying the background of the suspects to ascertain if they were involved in other anti-social activities.
