It was nearly 8 p.m. several hours after Sister Noella was found dead on the school premises in Malleswaram, but scores of people were still seen going into the school to pay their last respects to their beloved principal.

A pall of gloom had descended over the school that remained closed on Friday. Students, parents, colleagues, and family members crowded around the place grieving the untimely death of a loved teacher.

Sister Noella, who hails from KGF, was the principal of the primary school of Nirmala Rani Convent for over four years. Before that she had taught for 33 years in Cluny Convent near Fathima Church in Jalahalli.

She is the eldest of seven children. Her brothers said that they received a call at around 8.30 a.m. informing them of her death. “We were shocked when we heard the news. She was a very active person and always helpful to others. She had planned a trip to an amusement park with schoolchildren on December 3 and was looking forward to it,” they said.

Shruthi, a former student of the school, remembered her principal as a very sweet and helpful person. “She was always there to support us and a few days ago, she had asked me to take a few Kannada classes in the school. I could not believe when I got to know she died in such a tragic manner,” she said.

Sister Noella was remembered my many for her service to the poor. She had started a group called ‘Jai Sangha’ and had raised funds to help poor families and children.

Parents said that she had spent her own money to buy clothes and books for some children who couldn’t afford to buy them.

On Thursday evening, Sister Noella had spent time with schoolchildren and their parents at a programme. “Just 24 hours before she was talking so jovially with us, and it’s hard to believe that she is dead now,” said Selvi, another parent.

Police said they were probing into the death of Sister Noella.
