The special investigation team, probing the killing of the Rajanukunte sub-inspector B.S. Vijay Kumar by constable Anand Kumar on Sunday, started the investigations on Tuesday by recording the statement of police personnel present in the station at the time of murder.
The team, headed by Additional Director-General of Police Bipin Gopalkrishna, questioned Anand Kumar’s wife Sujatha, who was present at the station.
Ms. Sujatha, the police said, said she had come with her two children and father-in-law to meet SI Vijay Kumar on the fateful day. “She requested Vijay Kumar to grant her husband leave for few days as there was a family function. [Anand Kumar] had also fractured his hand and required medical treatment. Even his father had health issues that required treatment,” a source said.
Ms. Sujatha told the police when she went inside the chamber and requested Vijay Kumar to grant leave to her husband, he became furious and threw her out. “While I was walking out of the chamber, he followed me and turned towards Anand who was at the sentry point, and chided him for bringing family recommendations,” she reportedly told the police.
A livid Anand Kumar asked his family to go out and wait for him.
They did and shortly heard a few gunshots and screams from within. She ran in and saw her husband with a rifle in his hand and the SI slumped in his chair, bleeding.
She tried to snatch the rifle and cried for help. By then the other staff had rushed inside the SI’s chamber and overpowered her husband.
Some of them rushed the shot man to hospital while others guarded her husband.
Police sources said that the staff present also testified and have given their accounts on the incidents.
Bangalore Rural district Superintendent of Police D. Prakash said that Anand Kumar has moved to eight days’ police custody for further questioning.
