Following the mysterious death of a 15-year-old resident of the State home for boys, the State Human Rights Commission on Thursday took up a suo motu case and ordered an inquiry into the matter.
The Inspector-General of Police (SHRC) has been asked to submit a report by December 23.
A team led by C.G. Hungund, member of the commission, inspected the home in Koramangala after The Hindu carried a report on December 12 on the death of Pintu Kumar.
They found the home overcrowded, and felt that not separating older boys and children aged below 12 could lead to instances of abuse. Mr. Hungund directed the staff to separate the boys at least when they go to bed, so that chances of physical abuse could be reduced.
The team recorded the statements of the superintendent of the home and the doctor who examined the victim. “As per medical records, the victim was healthy and no health complications were recorded,” Mr. Hungund said, and added that as there were no external injuries, death from cardiac arrest was suspected. However, the post-mortem report would shed more light.
Pintu Kumar reportedly ran away from his house in Bihar and came to Bangalore via Chennai. He was rescued by BOSCO, a non-governmental organisation, from the railway station here and rehabilitated at the home two months ago.
