Shoot out case: Wife says it was in self-defence

A day after the shocking incident where a woman pulled the trigger at her husband on the busy Hosur Road near Singasandra junction, accused Hemsaveni (44), director of a city-based private security agency and facility management company, told police that she had fired six and not three rounds at her husband M.R. Sairam and that it was in self-defence.

Three bullets were recovered from Sairam’s body. The Surya City police is now searching for the other three rounds.

During investigation, Hamsaveni said that her husband was drunk and assaulted her in the car when they were returning home after lunch. She said Sairam tried to snatch the pistol from her in a bid to attack her. In retaliation, Hamsa snatched the weapon and fired indiscriminately. When the SUV they were travelling in reached Singasandra junction, Sairam, who sustained bullet injuries, got down from the car and ran towards a bus to go to a hospital. Furious, Hamsaveni did not let the bus move and tried to force her husband to de-board. Passers-by managed to calm her down and alerted the police.

The accused, who sustained injuries on her ear and neck, told the police that they were having marital problems and that she had even approached the HSR Layout police with a complaint against her husband a few days ago.

Being a family dispute, the police summoned Sairam and counselled them both before letting them go with a warning.

Meanwhile, Sairam who underwent a surgery at Sparsh Hospital is recovering. The police are waiting to record his statement.

The police are verifying the CCTv footage on Hosur Road and trying to identify the eyewitness to corroborate Hamsaveni’s claim. “It has been difficult to trace eye witness as it was a moving crowd, but we are looking for the driver and few persons who were staying in and around the the scene of crime to get their statements,” a senior police officer said.

Superintendent of Police Divya Gopinath who is supervising the investigations said that they are trying to ascertain the reason behind the attack. Though preliminary investigations points towards marital discord, the exact reason behind the attack is yet to be known, she said.

The couple have been married for 17 years and have a daughter.
