A 42-year-old shepherd, identified as Mareppa Hanumanth Edlur, a native of Tumkur village of Shahapur, Yadgir district, is feared dead in a crocodile attack on Tuesday.

The incident occurred when he was returning after drinking water from the Krishna river flowing by his village.

Honappa, another shepherd who was accompanying Mareppa while grazing sheep, made an attempt to rescue him from the crocodile, but in vain. The crocodile held on to Mareppa and dragged him into the water, villagers said.

Officials of the Forest and Revenue departments visited the spot. They said they would commence the search operation early morning on Wednesday. Expert swimmers and local fishermen will participate in the operation.
