The Government of India has conferred Shaurya Chakra posthumously to Lt. Col. E.K. Niranjan of the National Security Guard, who was killed while defusing a grenade at the scene of the terror attack at Pathankot IAF base in January.

Niranjan's father Shivarajan E.K. is a retired BEL employee and Niranjan, an alumni of BEL College. His father, who is in his hometown in Palakkad to inaugurate the 'Lt. Col E.K. Niranjan Smruthi Mandira', a memorial for his departed son, told The Hindu , "I am very much thankful to the government for having recognised and honoured my son Niranjan. My family and the people of my village are very proud of this."

Shivaraj is in his hometown in Elambulassery, Pallakad, to celebrate Independence Day with his 90-year-old mother. Around 400 children from nearby schools will attend the inauguration ceremony for the Smruthi Mandira to give Lt. Col. Niranjan a befitting tribute.

Lt. Col. Niranjan's brother Sharath Palam E.K. joined the Air Force inspired by his brother's achievements.
