Separate criteria to accredit Sanskrit varsities: NAAC

The National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) has decided to develop a separate criteria to assess and accredit Sanskrit universities and institutions. For the first time, all documents, which will be used for accreditation of these institutions, will be in Sanskrit. The move is part of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development’s (MHRD) effort to promote the language.

A press release issued by NAAC stated that a meeting of a six-member committee was conducted on Thursday and Friday based on the recommendations of the N. Gopalaswami committee.

NAAC director D.P Singh said a report will be submitted in three months. The committee comprises Radhavallabh Tripathi, former Vice-Chancellor, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, New Delhi, as chairperson; H.K. Satpathy, former Vice-Chancellor, Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetha, Tirupati, as co-chairperson; members: R.C. Panda, Vice-Chancellor, Maharshi Sandipani Sanskrit Vishwavidyalaya, Ujjain; Shrinivas Verkhedy, dean, Karnatak Sanskrit University; Ramakant Pandey, director, Mukta Svadhyaya Peetham, Institute of Distance Education, Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, Deemed University, New Delhi; Viroopaksha V. Jaddipal, professor, Department of Research and Publications, Rashtriya Sanskrit Vidyapeetham, Tirupati; and Ganesh Hedge, Deputy Adviser, NAAC, Bengaluru, as coordinator.
