Henceforth, around 1,500 houses in IV Block Rajajinagar will be part of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike's (BBMP) “segregation of garbage at source” programme.
The programme was launched here on Wednesday with the objective of creating awareness among residents about the importance and benefits of segregation of waste at source.
Minister for Law and Parliamentary Affairs S. Suresh Kumar, who launched the programme, said: “Segregation of waste is a practice that needs to be adopted by residents across the city. However, it is difficult to get people to segregate waste at source. The Global Investors Meet is being held in the city. Referring to a survey on “clean cities” conducted recently, he said it was heartening that most cities and towns from the State had made it to the list. BBMP Commissioner Bharatlal Meena said: “It is important to maintain cleanliness both inside and outside our homes."
After the launch, the Minister and the Commissioner went door-to-door urging residents to segregate waste. They distributed two dustbins to each household – a red one for dry waste and green for wet waste.
Vasanthi Krishna, a resident, said, “I welcome this programme and it will be very useful for the people. Though the programme seems to be easy in theory, it is practically difficult. The homemakers, have to cooperate.”
