A 44-year-old housewife from Raichur got a new lease of life after she successfully underwent a heart transplant at the government-run Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research in Bengaluru.
The woman was suffering from Dilated Cardiomyopathy for the past two years. She had a grossly dilated and poor functioning heart. She is married to a farmer.
The family could not afford prolonged treatment. They registered with Jeeva Sarthakathe, a government organisation that facilitates cadaveric organ donations, in Karnataka. She was lucky to get a donor within three months. “The surgery was performed on March 29,” said C.N. Manjunath, director of the institute.
The donor heart was retrieved from a brain dead patient at Aster CMI Hospital in Hebbal and brought to Jayadeva hospital within 21 minutes through a green corridor provided by the traffic police. After a successful transplant, the patient is recovering and her vital parameters are stable. She will be discharged on Wednesday, the doctor said.
This is the second heart transplant conducted at the institute. The transplant team led by Prof. Seetharama Bhat included anaesthesiologist N. Manjunath, surgeons Girish Gowda, Chandana, Divya M. and cardiolgists L. Sridhar and Ravimath.
“The first transplant patient Gangadhar is also doing well. He is employed as a security guard in Hassan,” the doctor added.
