A reporter with an English daily was arrested on Tuesday along with her husband and a friend for allegedly assaulting a woman police sub-inspector attached to the High Grounds police station.

According to a press release issued by the police on Tuesday, Vandana Puranik (30), her husband, Satish Puranik (37), their friend Projekta Mahendar (30) and three others were drinking alcohol in front of Mount Carmel College on Palace Road at around 3.15 a.m. on Tuesday.

When sub-inspector Shobha, who was on night rounds, questioned them, the group allegedly started misbehaving with her. Two of the men in the group also allegedly shoved Ms. Shobha. Sources in the police said Ms. Puranik tried to bully the police officer.

The three have been remanded in judicial custody.

Three commit suicide

Bodies of a 41-year-old woman and her two children were found hanging from a ceiling fan in their residence at Vidyamanyanagar in Tavarekere police station limits on Tuesday night. The police identified them as Sujata, Meghana (16) and Madhu (12). They suspect that the trio committed suicide on Sunday or Monday.

Sujata, who had separated from her husband about seven years ago, was living with her children. The police were alerted by a neighbours who complained of foul smell from the house.
