A migrant labourer from Bihar was killed in a freak accident in a plastic scrap yard in Kaikondanahalli on Sarjapur Main Road on the city's outskirts on Wednesday morning.
The South East Division police said S. Niranjan (31), from Bihar, was trying to cut a drum containing remnants of chemicals with an electrical cutter when the container exploded. A shocked Niranjan fell on the cutter, which pierced his chest. He died on the spot.
Scrap materials were gutted in a fire that broke out after the blast. Three fire tenders doused the blaze.
Engineer ends life
K. Deepthi (24), a B. Tech. graduate from Dharmavaram in Andhra Pradesh, hanged herself in her paying guest accommodation in Venkateswara Layout early on Wednesday.
Madiwala police said Deepthi, who had lost her father some years back, came to Bangalore a year ago looking for a job after failing to get one in Andhra Pradesh.
Her mother, Lakshmi, is understood to have told the Madivala police her daughter had taken a loan of Rs. 3 lakh to complete her education.
The Women and Narcotics branch police, attached to Central Crime Branch (CCB), busted a prostitution racket running under the garb of massage parlour here Tuesday night.
Indiranagar police raided Arnah Homes, a guesthouse in Domlur 2nd Stage, and arrested Lingaraju B. Madaiah (33) and two girls.
Madaiah had advertised the “massage” services in newspapers.
