Traffic between Tumkur and Bangalore on National Highway 4 was disrupted for nearly an hour on Saturday morning after around 600 students blocked the road following the death of a student in an accident.
Asha (16), a 10th standard student of Government High School in Chikkabidarakallu near Nelamangala, died on the spot after a goods carrier knocked her down near the Jindal factory near Chikkabidarakallu on NH4 around 7.30 a.m.
Asha, daughter of a van driver, was rushing to the school to attend the Independence Day celebrations. The vehicle was transporting mineral water bottles to the city from Tumkur. The vehicle hit thegirl and the rear wheels ran over the girl, said an officer of the Nelamangala police station.
As the news spread, students of Chikkabidarakallu government school rushed to the spot and blocked the road. They shouted slogans against the RTO and police officials for not taking action against over-speeding vehicles on the highway.
The local people too joined the students and urged the authorities and demanded speed breakers at the spot. Additional police force was sent to the spot. The police officials pacified the students and cleared the road block.
Due to the protest, around 2,000 vehicles got stuck on the highway. The driver managed to escape after abandoning his vehicle. Nelamangala police are investigating the case.
