In safe hands: Firemen bring out three-year-old Sanjana from the debris of a building that collapsed at Ejipura in Bengaluru on Monday.

Sanjana, the three-year-old who was pulled out of the debris three hours after a building collapsed in Ejipura on Monday, has suffered 60% burns and is undergoing treatment at Victoria Hospital.

Lying on the hospital bed, the little girl is unaware of the tragedy that took the lives of her parents — Shravan, 28, and Ashwini, 26. Under the care of her relatives, Sanjana is being given food and milk orally.

Although her condition is stable now, doctors say the big challenge is to prevent burn complications and resultant infections. “She has suffered deep burns all over her body. We are worried that she may develop infections with decreased immunity and electrolyte imbalance. We are treating her with antibiotics and intravenous fluids, with specialised dressing for the burn injuries,” said K.T. Ramesh, head of the Department of Plastic Surgery and Burns at Victoria Hospital.

Pointing out that patients with a high percentage of burns usually develop complications in the later stages of treatment, the doctor said,“We are doing our best to prevent infections.”

Landlord booked

Meanwhile, a day after the three-storey building collapsed following an LPG leak, killing seven people and leaving another seven injured, the Vivek Nagar police booked a case of negligence against the landlord.

S. Gunesha has been slapped with cases under Section 304-A (causing death by negligence) and Section 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code. He has been detained for questioning.

Meanwhile, BBMP officials said they had issued a notice to the landlord on September 25 stating that the building had become dilapidated and unsafe to live in. They said the landlord had been asked to demolish the building. A copy of the notice is available with The Hindu. Mr. Gunesha neither replied to the notice nor took action to evacuate the residents, sources said.
