A group of persons chopped off a 20-ft tall sandalwood tree from the Institute of Wood Science and Technology premises in the wee hours of Saturday, despite the presence of security guards.

According to the police, a few persons living in the staff quarters woke up to sound of tree felling and alerted the security guards, before informing the police. However, by then, the gang had loaded the chopped tree on the vehicle parked outside the gate and sped away.

The Sadashiva Nagar police have taken up a case and are investigating.
