The celebrated Indian-born author Salman Rushdie, who once faced the most famous fatwa ever, will be in the city on Friday to promote Midnight’s Children, the film by Deepa Mehta based on his eponymous Booker-winning novel published in 1981.

He will be accompanied by the filmmaker as well as actor Shriya Saran at the event being organised by Landmark and PVR Pictures. The event is strictly by invitation and the venue of the event has been kept under wraps.

The film is slated for a February 1 release and both Mr. Rushdie and Ms. Mehta have been on a promotional tour in India.

It may be recalled here that Mr. Rushdie, who was due to visit India for the last year’s Jaipur Literary Festival, had called off his visit at the last minute citing security threats.

Midnight’s Children is a family saga that allegorically reflects India’s transition from British colonialism to Independence and the Partition. It is considered one of the path-breaking works of Indo-Anglian writing and also won the Booker of Bookers prize.
