The charm of the rural setting was recreated in the urban city at ‘Janapada Gym’ at Kurubarahalli here on Sunday. Curious onlookers thronged in and around the Sambavamurthy Park in Shankar Mutt ward in the city and got a first-hand experience about rural life.
Children seemed most excited and thrilled about the concept. They tried their hand at drawing water from a well, churning butter, and cooking using old utensils. The organisers urged visitors to try their hand at making flower garlands, stitching, drawing rangoli and pounding wheat.
As part of Janapada Gym, a village fair too was recreated and vendors sold some lip-smacking delicacies. Toys that were being sold were a big hit among children.
Prakruti A. (14) said that she was thrilled to try her hand at pounding wheat and was eager to take part in other activities such as climbing bamboo ladders. M. Shivaraj, local councillor, said that the lifestyle of the people in the city had become sedentary. Even activities such as cooking and cleaning had become mechanised. “People in rural areas are healthier as they do physical work. At the event, we wanted people to get a glimpse of rural life,” he added.
