Drivers abandon buses in the middle of road

June 10, 2015 12:00 am | Updated 05:30 am IST - Bengaluru:

Continuing their enforcement drive, officials of the Transport Department on Tuesday conducted surprise checks in the southeast division and seized 200 private vehicles for violating permit conditions.

During the drive, over 50 drivers abandoned their buses in the middle of the road and fled. This caused traffic jams and inconvenienced several motorists, a senior official said.

The private buses were running parallel to BMTC buses, violating permit conditions and operating illegally at Attibele, Electronics City, Sarjapur Road, BTM Layout and Silk Board.

Many of these buses were found carrying goods. Buses with stage carriage permits were plying without payment of tax or fitness certificates besides other permit violations, a senior police officer said. These buses are not only causing loss to the State exchequer but also endangering the lives of passengers, he added.

A sum of Rs. 60 lakh in the form of fines would be collected from erring vehicle owners, an official release from the Transport Department said.

This is the second such drive this month. Last week, officials seized 100 buses for various violations at Peenya, Hebbal, Ring Road, Magadi Road and Majestic.
