Residents of Vijinapura in K.R. Puram came together on Sunday to clear a large black spot where construction waste and debris had been dumped for over four years.

Vijinapura Eco Civic Team (VECT), which had forced the BBMP to take up restoration of Vijinapura lake, had in October begun cleaning black spots in the area.

Shilpa Narayanan of VECT complained of reckless dumping of construction waste and debris in their area, which has also damaged Vijinapura lake. For instance, the black spot that was cleared on Sunday was blocking drains and raising concerns about flooding of the area during heavy rain.

BBMP has seven designated dump yards in the city. Mahadevapura zone, in which Vijinapura lies, has been allotted Mittiganahalli and Kadubeesanahalli for dumping debris. However, waste and debris from construction sites is not taken to these yards, which are on the outskirts of the city. Instead, they are dumped in the lakebed and other empty plots, Ms. Narayanan alleged.
