The Karnataka High Court on Thursday directed the State government to issue order reserving the post of Deputy Mayor to Scheduled Tribe (W) for the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP).

This direction has been issued by setting aside Government notification in which the post was reserved for Backward Class-A category.

However, the High Court refused to interfere with Government notification reserving the post of Mayor for the General category.

Justice L. Narayana Swamy passed the order while allowing a petition filed by two councillors of the BBMP belonging to ST category. They had complained that the posts either of the posts was never reserved for the ST as per rules governing reservation of these posts by way of rotation based on population of the STs in different city corporations in the State.
