Demanding that services of pourakarmikas working on contract basis in the various corporations and local bodies for the past several years in the state be regularised, Syed Mujeeb, president of Tumakuru Zilla Pourakarmikara Sanga (TZPS) remarked that the government needed to stop giving false assurances to the pourakarmikas.

Warning of launching an agitation if pourakarmikas’ services were not regularised, Mr. Mujeeb told reporters here on Monday that the government stated that the Cabinet had decided to end contract system from 2017 and ensure wages are paid directly to the pourakarmikas, in a meeting on Monday. “However, the government only seems to be supporting the contractors,” he alleged.

A. Narasimhamurthy, president of Tumakuru Zilla Kolegeri Nivasigala Hitharakshana Samiti, said that 70 per cent of pourakarmikas belong to Madiga caste, which comes under Scheduled Castes, while 30 per cent belong to minorities and Other Backward Classes. He demanded regularisation of all 38,000 pourakarmikas currently working under contract system across the state.

District General Secretary of TZPS N.K. Subramanya demanded the authorities concerned of Tumakuru City Corporation to restart giving Rs. 50 as breakfast allowance to each pourakarmika. This, he claimed, had been discontinued for the past month.
