Jaffer Javed drove off with a relative’s car which was found in front of the building from which he jumped.

Unable to stomach rejection by a girl he claimed to love, an engineering college dropout jumped off the fifth floor terrace of a residential apartment building on the centrally located Museum Road, injuring himself critically on Wednesday morning. He is in hospital with multiple fractures.

A resident of Austin Town, Jaffer Javed (23) entered the Museum Inn apartment complex at 8.45 a.m. and clambered to the terrace. Once there, he attracted attention by hurling abuses at the girl. Before the security personnel swung into action, Jaffer jumped off the terrace, much to the horror of passersby. Though fire and police personnel reached the spot, they could only watch as the young man ran forward and took the precipitous leap.

Live telecast

It was not just they who saw what was happening: the crew of a couple of TV channels, whose offices are nearby, were on the spot filming the episode and it was telecast to lakhs of viewers.

“We never allow strangers to enter. This man duped us by introducing himself as a painter. As we were waiting for a painter, we allowed him in. Within minutes he had jumped from the terrace,” a worker at the apartment told The Hindu .

Jaffer's father, Javed, a manager at a cement bricks manufacturing unit on Bannerghatta Road, refused to talk to the media. The Cubbon Park police, quoting him, said Jaffer was distraught over the one-sided relationship. A student of the AMC Engineering College near Bannerghatta National Park, he took the rejection so badly he dropped out, said an officer at the Cubbon Park police station, quoting Mr. Javed and his friends.

‘Uncontrollable'

“We never thought Jaffer would do this. He had been pestering a girl for the last four years. She was not interested and his condition had become uncontrollable since the last one month,” Jaffer's cousin told The Hindu on the premises of a private hospital on Vittal Mallya Road where he has been admitted.

Created a scene

According to the police, Jaffer also created a scene in front of Fraser Town police station on Tuesday.

“He appeared before the police station and abused the girl who is a resident of Hawkins Road and asked the police to arrest her “for rejecting his love”, said an officer at the Fraser Town police station.

The police called his parents and handed him over to them. After this, Jaffer allegedly barged into a relative's house and drove away with his car.

S.B. Maheshwarappa, Inspector of Police (Fraser Town police station), said car owner Abdul Kareem had requested police action against Jaffer.

Car found

The police seized the car that was parked in front of the Museum Inn apartments on Wednesday.

“So far no one has filed any complaint. Jaffer has suffered multiple fractures. We have registered a complaint of attempt to commit suicide against Jaffer at the Cubbon Park police station,” G. Ramesh, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Division), told The Hindu .
