Further inquiry into the “illegal parking” of government funds in banks has revealed 12 more bank accounts with a deposit of Rs. 225 crore belonging to the Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Department.

Announcing this at a press conference here on Friday, Rural Development and Panchayat Raj Minister H.K. Patil said this included deposits of Rs. 40 crore in State Bank of Mysore and Rs. 30 crore each in Union Bank of India and Corporation Bank.

These deposits had been made without the knowledge of any higher officials of the department, he said and expressed concern that no proper bookkeeping and account maintenance had been carried out with respect to these funds. This was in addition to the recent unearthing of a similar account where Rs. 134 crore had been illegally parked by an official in Andhra Bank, he said.

Pointing out that a three-member committee had been formed to conduct an inquiry into such illegal parking of government funds, he said exact details of cases such as involvement of officials would be known only after the completion of the inquiry.

To prevent such scams, the RDPR Department would adopt a 13-point protocol to completely eliminate any scope for financial indiscipline, he said.
