A youth has been arrested on charges of attempting to rape an eight-year-old girl at his house in Madivala police limits on Saturday evening.
The victim, a third standard student, is the daughter of an autorickshaw driver and neighbour of the accused. On Saturday around 6.45 p.m., the girl went to the compound of the accused to recover the ball that she was playing with. The youth took her inside the house and allegedly removed her clothes forcibly, police said.
The girl was rescued when her mother, who had grown anxious about her daughter going missing, went next door and found the youth allegedly trying to abuse the child. The youth fled on seeing the mother. The child was immediately taken to Victoria Hospital for medical examination.
The girl’s family filed a complaint with the Madivala police, who arrested the youth from Venkatapura.
The police declined to disclose the identity of the accused as his age was yet to be ascertained. A police official said this was not the first time that the accused had tried to abuse the girl. Three months ago, the boy allegedly tried to molest her. When his parents got wind of it, he was punished, he added.
The Madivala police have booked cases against the accused under various sections of the Indian Penal Code. They have also registered a case under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.
