Rape accused was sacked by previous school employer for misbehaving with children

The skating instructor, Mustafa (30), who was arrested for raping a six-year-old girl in a reputed school at Marathahalli here, was sacked by his previous school for misbehaving with girl students.

The accused would not have secured a job if the school had conducted a background check with the school where he worked previously, a senior police officer said.

“Though the school terminated his services, they did not file a police complaint. Had they done so, the rape may not have happened,” the official said.

The school in Whitefield had terminated Mustafa on December 16, 2011 for ‘gross misconduct’ with girl students. Three months later, Mustafa managed to get into the school in Marathahalli, where his five-year-old daughter also studies, as a skating instructor. The principal of the school in Whitefield said the school follows stringent policies that staff should not touch children while teaching or training. “Mustafa was warned twice when I had observed him touching students while training. He was issued memos twice and the third time he was terminated along with a final memo on December 16, 2011.”

“There was no necessity for police intervention since there was no complaint against him either by students or parents. The school took suo motu decision to terminate him and even sent mails to parents,” she justified. Parents were told the grounds of his termination, she added.

A school source said that the Human Resource Department of the Marathahalli school had conducted verification but nothing was found. The source also refused to comment if similar instances had taken place in the school.

Meanwhile, Police Commissioner M.N. Reddi said the police would book a case against the Marathahalli school for negligence on their part. “Law is equal to everyone and action will be taken as per rules,” he said.
