A nondescript government primary school in Gavipuram has one claim to fame… matinee idol Rajinikanth studied there. But even he has not been able to save the school from neglect.

The State government had taken up renovation of Gavipuram Government Kannada Model Primary School in 2008 and sanctioned Rs 81.4 lakh for the same. A multi-storey building was envisaged in place of the old school building. The project was handed over to Rajiv Gandhi Rural Housing Corporation Ltd.

However, no work has been carried out at the site for more than a year now, claim members of Karnataka Rajini Seva Samithi.

Samithi president Rajini Murugan G said, “We have appealed to the officials concerned and elected representatives to ensure that work is completed at the earliest.” They have also lodged a complaint with the State Human Rights Commission (SHRC), which has now issued a notice to Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan seeking a status report on the construction work.

Around 400 students were enrolled in the school in 2008, but the number has come down to less than 50. Since it is a government-run school, the Samithi cannot get involved in the construction work, he added.
