The Legislative Assembly on Thursday passed the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage (Amendment) Bill, 2011 making it mandatory for citizens living within the jurisdiction of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike to install rainwater harvesting systems in their buildings.

This is an amendment to the Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) Act, 1964.

Moving the Bill, Law, Parliamentary Affairs and Urban Development Minister S. Suresh Kumar said, “Every owner or occupier of a building having site area of not less than 2,400 sq. ft or every owner who proposes to construct a building on a site area of not less than 1,200 sq. ft shall provide rainwater harvesting structures for storage or for groundwater recharge.”
