Time to shake out your umbrellas and raincoats: the monsoon has begun to make its presence felt in the city.
The city wore a cloudy look all Wednesday and by around 4 p.m., the sky grew dark, forcing motorists to switch on their headlights.
Several areas received heavy rain coupled with gusty winds.
Although, there was no serious rain-related damage, there were complaints of flooding and tree fall in some parts. Till 5.30 p.m., the city recorded 7.6 mm rainfall.
According to the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike control rooms, the maximum complaints were received from Bangalore East.
Tree fall was reported near the Ganapati temple near Ulsoor Lake, R.V. Road near R.V. Teachers' College, Kavalbyrasandra, and Vigyan Nagar.
A branch fell on an electric pole near Shantala Silk House, which disrupted power supply in and around the area. Water logging was reported Jeevanahalli, Johnson Market, the Kino underpass in Seshadripuram, Elite Junction, Sagar Apollo Junction, the downward ramp of the City Market flyover, while drains overflowed near the Indian Institute of Management on Bannerghatta Road.
Mayor S.K. Nataraj personally attended to complaints at the BBMP's central control room for about half an hour in the evening. He instructed the zonal engineers to take immediate action on the complaints and to call the complainants back after attending to the problem. All the control rooms should function round-the-clock with the onset of monsoon, he said, and warned officials of stringent action if they failed to attend to citizens' complaints.
Meanwhile, the traffic police swung into action and even sent traffic alerts via SMS, warning citizens of jams at Domlur on Airport Road, Marathahalli towards ITPL, Mysore Road, Dairy Circle, Richmond Road, Town Hall and Chamarajpet. They warned motorists not to park beneath trees as a precautionary measure.
