Officials have raided an illegal stone quarrying unit operating for several years on eight acres of government land at Bettadasanapura, near Electronics City, off Hosur Road.
According to the officials, the owner, Venugopal Gowda, claimed he had leased 1.3 acres from the government, but was unable to produce documents to back his claim. Besides this, he had encroached upon 7.1 acres, which he leased out to Puttaswamy Gowda and Raghavendra Reddy.
Reddy set up an asphalting unit to supply tar to the city corporation and the zilla panchayat for laying roads, while Puttaswamy Gowda set up a concrete mixing unit.
The district administration had issued notices to them seeking an explanation, but got no reply. So, they issued an order to recover the encroached property and take penal action.
On Wednesday, officials accompanied by personnel from the enforcement cell, Revenue Department and 30 policemen, demolished the encroaching units.
They seized 50 lorry loads of crushed stone, eight trucks, two cranes, crushing units, asphalting unit, two generators and other equipment.
The recovered area has been fenced and secured, Deputy Commissioner of Bangalore district (Urban) G.C. Prakash said.
