The State government’s biometric system for the issue of foodgrains and kerosene for ration card holders has run into rough weather. Ration card holders, mostly belonging to the lower socio-economic groups, have been denied goods in many cases.

Under the Public Distribution System (PDS), rice, wheat, pulses and kerosene an be got by registering the thumb impression of one member of the card holding family. Since most card holders do menial jobs, there is damage to their finger tips. This is one of the reasons why the system fails to recognise thumb impressions.
