Tension prevailed near HDFC Ltd. on Kasturba Road after members of the Ambedkar Kranti Sene staged a protest demanding action against an official for allegedly outraging the modesty of a woman while recovering dues.
The protestors claimed that though a case has been registered against the manager and recovery agents, the Girinagar police have failed to act on it.
Kranti Raju, President of Ambedkar Kranti Sene, said that Bhagath Singh, a hotel employee and a resident of Girinagar, had availed a home loan of Rs. 30 lakh from the bank. Though he paid most of the instalments regularly, Rs. 1.4 lakh was due. He could not repay the same due to financial trouble. On September 11, he alleged, HDFC Ltd staff barged into his house when Mr. Singh had gone out, and misbehaved with his wife Tejaswini in the presence of her mother-in-law and a small child on the pretext of recovery.
Tejaswini raised alarm, which drew the attention of neighbours who rushed in to help. The Girinagar police initially refused to take the complaint, but registered a case after the family approached Joint Commissioner of Police Sharath Chandra, the protestors alleged.
The protestors demanded that the police take strict action against the HDFC Ltd. staff and submitted a memorandum to the Cubbon Park police.
