The Federation of Apartment Associations Bengaluru (FAAB) has organised a peaceful protest at Maurya Circle at noon on Saturday against the notification making it compulsory for apartment complexes with more than 50 units to have an sewage treatment plant (STP).

The federation represents over 150 complexes in the city.

The FAAB is protesting the decision to make installation of STPs binding on all apartment irrespective of their age. Stating that installing STPs in old buildings would pose several technical challenges, a memorandum listing the challenges will be handed over to the Governor after the protest, a statement said.

According to C.S.V. Prasad, president of FAAB, old apartment complexes were not planned to include an STP. “Forcefully enforcing the rule will lead to digging, which may compromise the strength of the foundation. An STP has to be planned before construction of the apartment. Any post construction modification can lead to health hazards for the structure,” the statement says.
