Power generation in the State has dipped over the past few days due to technical snags in some thermal stations. According to sources in the Karnataka Power Transmission Company Ltd. (KPTCL), snags in three units of Raichur Thermal Power Station, one unit of Bellary Thermal Power Station and one of Udupi Power Corporation Ltd. has resulted in a shortfall of 1,700 MW. However, the sources added that the power load has decreased to some extent due to rains lashing some parts of the State.
While Bescom maintained that it is not resorting to power cuts, residents in some parts of the city have been complaining about intermittent supply and unscheduled outages.
Kodigehalli resident Narasimhaiah said that power supply is disrupted for two hours a day – one hour in the morning and another in the evening. Sivashankar K., a resident of AECS Layout, said that power supply was disrupted at regular intervals. He added that there was no power supply between 3.30 p.m. and 6.30 p.m. on Friday.
A senior Bescom official, on condition of anonymity, said, “Given the severe shortfall, we have no option but to resort to load shedding. The saving grace is that consumption has reduced due to rains. The use of irrigation pump sets has come down.”
Another official attributed disruptions to pre-monsoon work being carried out across the city.
