Potholes reappear with rains

In the last two days, two persons have been killed while manoeuvring either around a bad stretch of road or a pothole.

The reappearance of potholes with just two spells of pre-monsoon rains has clearly shown the quality of the work carried out in the last year and indicates that road quality will only deteriorate during the monsoon. This comes after over six months of smooth roads following a special drive to fill potholes.

Potholes have emerged on several thoroughfares. In some stretches, the top bitumen coat has come off. Sunday’s accident on Mysuru Road in which a 16-year-old girl riding pillion died after a BMTC bus hit the two-wheeler was due to a bad stretch of road.

Bad stretches, especially on Mysuru Road and Kanakapura Road, are the result of the ongoing Namma Metro work, BBMP officials said.

An official said that the BBMP is asphalting roads and desilting common drains across the city on a war footing. BBMP has Rs. 417 crore under the Nagarothana scheme for 68 arterial and sub-arterial roads. Tenders have been called for ward-wise works too, say civic officials.
