The Inspector-General of Registration and Commissioner of Stamps Adoni Syed Saleem has sought police protection to a whistleblower, who has complained about stamp duty evasion by housing cooperative societies in Bangalore.
However, even though the IGR’s letter addressed to the Police Commissioner was sent on October 31, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Kamal Pant said the department had not received any such communication.
In his letter, Mr. Saleem had said that Ganesh S. Kaundinya had complained about the stamp duty evasion pertaining to Telecom Employees’ Cooperative Society and others while registering 96 documents. Currently complaints had been registered in Gandhinagar and Basavangudi district registrars’ offices and action was being taken to recover stamp duty that had been evaded, the letter said.
According to sources, the evasion of stamp duty by cooperative societies was to the tune of about Rs. 80 crore.
He said that Mr. Kaundinya had complained to the IGR’s office as well as the Income Tax office about the scams pertaining to the housing cooperative societies. “Provide Mr. Kaundinya security since he has complained that he has been receiving threats from some vested interest,” it said.
Meanwhile, Mr. Pant said: “We have not come across this issue nor we have knowledge about the letter.”
