There is a lot of speculation on the reasons for 35-year-old City Armed Reserve (CAR) constable Subash Chandra to poison himself along with his wife and two children on Tuesday morning. The police are waiting to talk to the constable, who is recuperating in hospital.
While doctors were unable to save his family, the constable’s condition is stable. Police personnel, especially in the lower ranks, are demanding a detailed probe into the case.
“He is now out of danger and we think he will be fit to speak to us on Thursday,” said a police officer attached to Sampigehalli police station.
His relatives and friends denied any knowledge of him having debts, marital problems or facing trouble at the workplace.
Shashidar Venugopal, president of Akhila Karnataka Police Mahasangha, said, “After farmers, it’s policemen who commit suicides in this nation. Their salaries are low and they are abused at the work place by their superiors and the public. They face a lot of problems.”
Police personnel said that the grievance redressal mechanism is not ‘properly’ in place. “There is a lot of political interference in the department. Frequent transfers also put personnel under a lot of pressure,” said a constable.
