A police official has been suspended for the alleged torture of a 17-year-old boy. The case came to light after the teen attempted suicide at his home in Kamakshipalya on Thursday night.

The victim, an employee of a footwear store in Kunigal, was tortured after he was picked up by the police on suspicion of theft after his uncle Nanjappa, with whom he lives in Kamakshipalya, discovered some valuables missing from the house.

The complaint was filed on October 15 and the boy also went missing. He was picked up two days ago and tortured allegedly by assistant sub-inspector Thimme Gowda, including injuring his genitals.

When it emerged that the boy was innocent, he was dropped back to his residence on Wednesday night. Unable to bear the humiliation, he attempted to hang himself but was saved. Close questioning by his family led to the details of the torture, following which they and neighbours staged a protest. The police offered to pay for the boy’s medical expenses and suspended Mr. Thimme Gowda pending inquiry.
