The police have intensified search for former councillor V. Nagaraj from whose residence ₹14.8 crore in demonetised currency was seized.

According to sources, there are rumours that Nagaraj was trying to surrender before the court to get anticipatory bail. The police are hoping to arrest him before he approaches the court. “Nagaraj was trying to contact his family members through telephone booths to get information on the development of the case. We have some clues of his whereabouts,” said a senior police officer.

Nagaraj recently got his name legally removed from the rowdy-sheet stating that he was not involved in anti-social activities. “It will be a challenge for us to track him down before he gets an anticipatory bail. Otherwise, it will be very difficult to question him in detail about the money exchange racket,” the officer said.

So far, he has managed to evade the police dragnet. The police are also verifying several property documents recovered from his house.
