Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) seems to have woken up to the menace of garbage being dumped on the sly in villages along national highways.

On Friday, BBMP Commissioner G. Kumar Naik wrote to city Police Commissioner N.S. Megharikh seeking help in identifying the lorries that have been taking garbage out of the city during the night and dumping it in villages along the national highways.

“The city police have put up CCTV cameras at strategic locations at various entry/exit points to the city. We have sought their assistance to analyse the footage and identify the erring lorries going to these secluded spots during the night. The contractors so identified will be penalised,” Mr. Naik said, and added that they were also considering catching these lorries drivers red-handed with the help of police nakabandi.

After the recent festival season, villagers near Nelamangala, Bidadi and Devanahalli found garbage contractors dumping mixed festival waste in open farmlands in their villages during the night. This had led to protests by the village residents.
