An alert beat constable not just averted a house burglary but caught two burglars red-handed, only to sustain an injury attacked by the burglars. Police fired at the two burglars in their limbs in self defence, after the burglar duo did not heed to warnings by the cops and reportedly attacked them with an iron rod.

The incident occurred in HMT Layout, Vidyaranyapura in the early morning hours of Tuesday. The two burglars now identified as Akhil Beera, 26 and Mithun, 37, both hailing from West Bengal are being treated at Victoria Hospital.

Nagabhushan, a head constable with Vidyaranyapura police on beat 2, in the jurisdiction observed activity in a house locked from outside from the past four days. Nagabhushan soon alerted Bhyrappa, a sub-inspector on night rounds, who in turn alerted Puneeth, inspector Vidyaranyapura who rushed to the spot with enforcements.

Mr. Puneeth told The Hindu that the police team rounded up the house and entered the house through the main door which was already broken by the burglar duo. “We confronted the two men on the first floor where they had taken away all the valuables and were ready to flee. When we warned them to surrender, one of them assaulted our head constable with an iron rod. I fired one round in the air. But this did not produce any results and I fired two rounds at their legs,” he said.

The house belonged to one Murali Manohar, a retired Andhra Pradesh government employee. The family, hailing from Chittoor, had bought the property two years ago. The family was visiting their native place in Chittoor and the house was locked since Thursday.

Additional Commissioner (Crime) P.Harishekharan, told The Hindu , “In spite of repeated instructions, the house owners had left the house locked from outside using a lock. The newspapers and milk packets were lying in the compound for almost a week now, giving away that the house was presently unoccupied by its inmates to the burglars.”
