As many as 212 persons were murdered, 63 women raped, 321 women molested, 594 robbed and over 2,727 persons have been cheated. These are the crime figures of the city during 2013, based on cases booked by the Bangalore police till November 30.
Though the figures look shocking, senior police officials maintained that the crime rate has actually dipped compared with the last two years. The police maintained that effective policing and pro-people programmes had helped bring down the crime rate effectively.
Even though the number of rapes in the city came down to 63 rapes during 2013 from the 90 reported in 2012, the number of women subjected to molestation went up from 250 cases in 2012, to 321 during 2013. During 2011, the number of molestation cases reported was 354.
However, a senior police officer maintained that an increased awareness had led to a rise in the number of cases booked for crime against women, particularly molestation. “Earlier, victims used to restrain themselves from filing cases, but owing to an increase in the awareness, more incidents are being reported”, a senior police official said.
According to data provided by the Bangalore City police, 450 dowry harassment and domestic violence cases have been booked this year compared with 525 in 2012 and 458 in 2011. Similarly, 48 women have been killed owing to dowry related violence this year compared with 51 in 2012 and 53 in 2011.
According to statistics, 212 murders, including nine for gain, were reported compared with 266 in 2012 and 232 in 2011.
Similarly, the city witnessed 35 dacoity cases so far, which is less as compared with 37 in 2012 and 43 in 2011.
