The police were back at Bangalore University's Central College campus as a fresh war of attrition between its officials erupted yet again.
A day after Registrar (Administration) B.C. Mylarappa issued an order relieving Special Officer (Exams) Syed Jamal from his duties, the latter's office was sealed on Saturday morning. Subsequently, a complaint was filed at the Ulsoor Gate police station following which the police broke open the office in the afternoon.
Battle through media
Meanwhile, BU's Additional Legal Adviser G.R. Gurumath on Saturday shot back a reply to the Registrar's show-cause notice via the same channel — the media. In the letter, copies of which are marked to Vice-Chancellor N. Prabhu Dev and Chancellor H.R. Bhardwaj, Mr. Gurumath demanded the removal of the Registrar.
“I'm sure that the widely publicised, so-called confidential show-cause notice is an attempt to browbeat me from discharging my responsibilities to ensure the implementation of the court orders regarding withdrawal of [the] Ph.D. degree to M. Venkataramanappa on the ground of plagiarism, for whom you (Prof. Mylarappa) were the guide,” the press statement said.
Reacting to the accusation that he has not been attending office despite receiving a hefty remuneration, Mr. Gurumath said: “It is true that since its inception I have not been functioning from the Office of the Legal Cell, as the Legal Cell chamber is designated for a full-time Legal Adviser, which I am not, nor interested to be.”
Registrar's stand
Prof. Mylarappa laughed off Mr. Gurumath's demand for his recall saying that he had no locus standi . “I have written to the Governor and the State government regarding the illegal appointments and irregularities which are affecting the university's [finances],” he said.
The final decision on appointments, demotions and promotions was the Syndicate's prerogatives, he said, and added that Dr. Prabhu Dev should call for a regular Syndicate meeting soon where the matters could be resolved.
